UNC E-News–September 15, 2008
Breaking News !!!
——————–
Uptown Update posted a referendum that will
be on the November ballot in specific Uptown precincts.
It’s asking voters in they want 40% of the Wilson Yard TIF
money to go towards affordable housing–please go to
www.uptownupdate.com to read the entire referendum.
Pay special attention to the phrase “including foreclosed-upon
properties.”  This is a new twist and TIF funds have never been
allowed to be used to purchase foreclosed properties.
What’s the latest on Wilson Yard?
—————————————-
Our community activism has turned up the heat on the Wilson Yard project.
Fix-Wilson-Yard, is focused on legal action to change the current misguided plan,
recently notified the City of pending legal action.  You can read the entire
letter in the Fix Wilson Yard link below.
Thanks to technology and the Internet, don’t miss the video with Shiller, at the
2003 debate, talking about what the community wants in Wilson Yard.
The link is below under How Significant are the changes to Wilson Yard.
Yes, that really is Shiller talking about a Crate & Barrel built there.
The press has a strong interest in Wilson Yard right now.  Don’t miss the News-Star
viewpoint by Molly Phelan, Back to the Drawing Board–Fix Wilson Yard,
about why we are taking legal action, click here to read.
The real impact of Wilson Yard on surrounding neighborhoods
—————————————————————————
We’re encouraged so many residents from surrounding neighborhoods are starting to
understand the serious repercussions the Wilson Yard plan will have on their community.
Our recent Fix Wilson Yard presentation at Lakeview High School raised serious
questions about this project harms Uptown and the surrounding neighborhoods.
More meetings and community outreach efforts are in the works.  Let’s keep the momentum
going and growing!

What’s going on with Wilson Yard construction?
———————————————————-
It’s been very quiet on the work along Montrose and Broadway.
No work crews.  No construction.  Just a big empty hole.
Truman College is going gang busters with the parking garage.  Remember
Truman is getting $10 million in TIF funds.  The construction fencing is up
and the eastern side-walk and the mall are now closed with no access to Wilson.
Thanks to all who have offered help
———————————————
The community outpouring to volunteer is also simply amazing. We’re working on
developing a list of volunteer activities
and promise to be in touch very soon.
Keep the momentum going
