Wilson Underline—After the Survey, what’s happening?

After we published the Wilson Underline community survey results, www.wilsonunderline.com in May, it was clear people overwhelmingly support building the Wilson Underline plan, a vibrant public space from Montrose to Wilson.

What progress has been made with the CTA, City and Alderman to make the Wilson Underline happen?  Stay tuned for a more detailed update. And thank you for patiently waiting and asking “how can we help”?

CHA Housing & Uptown Shootings—Lackadaisical management hurts everyone

Uptown’s gangs and their shooting rampage continued this past weekend with one innocent man dead and another known gangbanger hobbling with an ankle wound.  Greg Tucker Jr. was fatally shot near Clarendon Park Sunday night, see DNAinfo article for details.

Right now, the CHA properties in Sheridan Park are at the top of the subsidized “housing-that-harbors-gangs” list. Our block clubs’ public safety folks have been meeting behind closed doors with the alderman, CHA, police and states attorney to tackle the known gang-infested properties in Sheridan Park.  What action is the CHA taking to clean up their act and these properties listed below?

CHA’s 4425 N Malden property, still continues to house the Sims family—one Sims brother murdered, two still alive for now and living comfortably in their CHA apartment. CHA 4454 N Magnolia, Unit E, no eviction. CHA 4454 N Racine 1st floor unit—police constantly respond to 911 calls. No eviction.  We’ve heard from an inside source that CHA tenants neighboring these tenants have endlessly reported these gangs to the CHA. Many are so fed up that they’ve asked to be moved. What does that tell you about CHA’s inability to do their job…to provide SAFE Housing? Good neighbors having to leave their homes because of bad apples who continue to live in our area.

We will continue to monitor developments and let you know once we hear more from our public safety team.

Underscore Theatre & the NEW Pride Arts Center

Once upon a time, there used to be a theater company known as Profiles Theatre, a longtime Buena Park company who recently closed due to allegations of workplace abuse documented by the Reader during a yearlong investigation of the acclaimed storefront theater. Flash forward to the fall and the empty Profiles space is the new home to Pride Films and Plays(PFP) and has been renamed as the Pride Arts Center. According to the PFP website, the 90-seat space at 4139 N. Broadway serves as the primary venue for the company’s stage productions, affectionately known as The Broadway. The 50-seat studio a few doors north at 4147 N. Broadway, dubbed The Buena, serves chiefly as a rental venue. We welcome PFP and the Pride Arts Center to the neighborhood and wish them a long residency in Buena Park!

Also, our local theater group in Uptown, Underscore Theatre Company, has been invited by PFP to take residency at the Pride Arts Center and Underscore has accepted the invite! While Underscore has performed in venues all over the city, they will soon make the new center their home base. Meanwhile, Underscore’s next production, Tonya & Nancy: the Rock Opera, is generating much buzz and was named as one of the must see theatrical productions this fall by the Chicago Tribune. T&N opens at Theater Wit on November 25th. Click here for more information about this exciting new production.

AND always remember…

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.

Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
